Book Review: Descender Vol 1: Tin Stars by Jeff Lemire

Image
Descender, Vol. 1: Tin Stars by Jeff Lemire My rating: 4 of 5 stars "God? I don't think so, Doctor Quon...it's a machine ." First of all....that artwork, tho!! Dustin Ngyuen has been on my radar for a while, but I've never read a book he's done all the artwork for. This was an absolute treat!! I was a little apprehensive going in, because I just read Jeff Lemire's Gideon Falls, Vol. 1: The Black Barn , and it wasn't really my cup of tea. Apparently, when he's writing straight-up sci-fi, it's much more "my bag." It's about a little boy robot extremely reminiscent of Haley Joel Osment's character in the movie A.I. . While that was technically a retelling of 'Pinocchio' , this was quite a lot more. I would say it's a mix between that and 'Battlestar Galactica' . I'm definitely reading more of this series. Book Review: Sex Criminals Volume One: One Weird Trick by Matt Fraction

Image
Sex Criminals: Volume One: One Weird Trick by Matt Fraction My rating: 3 of 5 stars "I know how this looks. Don't judge us." This was probably the most original concept in a book I've seen in a while. Either that means we're all digging from the same brainspace or I need to expand my horizons. You decide. I really liked both main characters. Suzie seemed a little more comfortable with her erotic side, but Jon was more comfortable with the idea of crime. It could have been the other way around and I still would've loved the complicated way they complimented each other. How completely human and believable. You know what else surprised me? The authority represented. I just expected something the way Suzie kind-of imagined and it was really shocking when we discovered who they were. The art was so/so for me. It wasn't by any stretch "bad," just not my cup of tea. While I did think the idea was crazy-refreshing, I don't know if I'll contin...

Book Review: Green Lantern Corps: Recharge by Geoff Johns

Image
Green Lantern Corps: Recharge by Geoff Johns My rating: 4 of 5 stars "Good work, Poozers. Ya deserve a donut for that." Ah, man. So I was reading through the Geoff Johns Green Lantern run, right? That story revolves mostly around Hal Jordan and a bit of the Corps. For whatever reason, I kind of overlooked this series which ran around the same time. My goal is to read both up to the Blackest Night/Brightest Day storyline. I'm so glad I went back to these. I just love space stories where the majority of characters are mostly aliens that look weird and awesome. Kilowog and Guy continue to be favorites. I also really like Isamot (the dinosaur-looking dude) . In all seriousness, though, why does it always have to be giant spiders??? Can't wait to carry on the adventures of the GL Corps and watch them rebuild! View all my reviews

Book Review: Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews

Image
Sweep in Peace by Ilona Andrews My rating: 4 of 5 stars "My imagination painted a huge brawl in the ballroom and Her Grace quietly sneaking off with a bloody body." What an astonishingly well-done follow-up. The first book gave me just enough to leave me wondering what would happen next to each of the characters and this story followed through with answering just enough to still leave me wanting more, while also planting some new seeds in my ever-questing brain-space. Dina is such an excellent heroine. She talks herself down before getting worked up almost every time someone or something gets to her. Watching her thoughts versus her outward reactions makes her so damn relatable! Orro is my new favorite character. He's a diva in the very best sense and I loved him from the moment he was introduced. I also quite enjoyed learning about the three cultures introduced here and you know who else was a standout character? Gertrude Hunt. Well done. Her Grace... wh...

Book Review: Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews

Image
Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews My rating: 3 of 5 stars "My magic rolled from me in a powerful wave. The inn creaked in alarm. Nice going. I was scaring the house." Overall, this book was very, very good. It definitely has the potential to grow into an un-put-downable series. While I was reading it, I was hooked, but not completely sold. It wasn't until after I'd finished it and started thinking about all of the ( new! ) concepts introduced that I got really excited about reading the next one. The heroine, Dina, is not your typical ass-kicking queen, but rather a very down-to-earth (heh) , rational, normal, adult woman. Except for the magic, or...science or...stuff. You'll just have to read it. I'm not giving anything away! I'll leave you with this. It has introduced several species of supernatural creatures (werewolves, vampires) in a refreshingly different way with mythologies that are surprising and new. It's given me at least four chara...

Book Review: Green Lantern Vol. 3: Wanted - Hal Jordan

Image
Green Lantern Vol. 3: Wanted - Hal Jordan by Geoff Johns My rating: 3 of 5 stars Rocket Red: "Everyone knows you are guilty. " Hal Jordan: "What else is new?" This one was short and I didn't love the Amon Sur storyline. By the end, I understood why we needed it, but it wasn't my favorite. We dive into a little more OA/Star Sapphire history and that was pretty awesome. However, the triangle that led to was not fun to watch. Especially when you learn the position Hal's in by the end of the story. Aside from the clear Hal Jordan moments, my favorite cameos were Batman (all showing off his willpower and whatnot) and John Stewart being quintessentially himself. This is the first collection that's felt a little 'eh,' to me, but it was by no means bad. I loved Daniel Acuna's art contribution. View all my reviews

Actor Evolution: Domhnall Gleeson

Image
◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕ ◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕ ◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕ Domhnall Gleeson.  Irish, ginger...phenomenon.  He's got this astonishingly genuine way of acting.  If he's feeling it, so are you.  He tends to play very different characters: I've seen him be a coward, a brainy guy, entirely honorable, lionharted, corrupted, desperate, moonstruck...his range is very impressive. If he's got a specific character type that he likes to portray over and over, I haven't found it.  He also switches back and forth between leading man and character actor.  What is your favorite role he's done? ◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕ ◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕ ◩ ◪ ⬔ ⬕

Fascinating Fanart: The 11th Doctor

Image
I can completely see why so many people have chosen Eleven as 'their' Doctor.  I didn't get it while he was current (don't kirr me!), but I was still sore over the loss of Ten.  Looking back, though, there were some really great moments during his run!  I can't wait to view Eleven's series again and really appreciate his energy.  He's always so happy and fun or very dark and serious.  Plus, he constantly had amazing companions. Fascinating Fanart: The Fifth Element

Image
Let's do some sci-fi this week!  Has there ever been a more perfectly awesome flick than The Fifth Element ?  If you're a sci-fi nerd, you swear by it.  You've said, "You haven't  seen the Fifth Element?!" at least once in your lifetime...and for good reason.  It's got it all...Bruce Willis in his sci-fi heyday, a singing blue alien, Chris Tucker in (kind-of) drag and Gary Oldman doing what he does best.  Let's also not forget the pumpkin-orange-maned heroine who runs around (seemingly-comfortably) half-naked for most of the film.  In all seriousness, what's not to like?
