Fascinating Fanart: The Bride of Frankenstein

Image
The Bride of Frankenstein is so deeply rooted in pop culture.  She is instantly recognizable and apparently a lot of fun to draw.  Whether or not you've actually seen the 1935 movie that spawned all of this, I'm sure you can appreciate these unique and truly inspired pieces of art that are the result. Here's to the ultimate living dead girl. Bride by Danusko

Fascinating Fanart: Elvira!

Image
Did you grow up watching Elvira's Movie Macabre  (1981)?  The "re-vamp" done in 2010 ( Movie Macabre )?  What about that horror-comedy she was in: Mistress of the Dark ?  You either know exactly who I'm talking about or you're in a generation deprived of this type of tv gimmick.  It made watching really bad horror movies fun, though.   If you love film like I do, it's one of the things you need: to see past all of the mediocre special effects and enjoy the story-even if you're just laughing the whole time.  Elvira went out of her way to make it a fun experience and those who can appreciate that love her for it.  So, enjoy these fan depictions of the ultimate gothic valley girl. Fascinating Fanart: Gravity Falls!

Image
So do you want the good news or the bad news?  We'll just rip that bandaid off.  I'll only be doing 'Fascinating Fanart' posts every other week-starting now.  This was never intended to be a blog dedicated to fan art, as amazing as it is!  My hope is that I'll have more time to post other content such as reviews and lists. So, onward...Gravity Falls!!!  Were you guys lucky enough to see this eerie, creative show?  Did you enjoy shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Over the Garden Wall, Aaahh! Real Monsters or Invader Zim?  That is to say: super creepy, extremely weird and entertaining cartoons?  Well, you should definitely check this one out, then...because damn.  It's a true shame that it only got two seasons, but man, are they worth watching!  Can you pick out a favorite moment? Fascinating Fanart: The Addams Family

Image
Who else is about to bust out the Addams Family movies and get their weird on?  If you're like me, this happens once, maybe twice a year?  Well, it's about that time again and there is some wicked art out there depicting the notoriously kooky family.  Enjoy. Gomez and Morticia by juhaihai

Fascinating Fanart: Gotham

Image
Aw, man...I'm so thrilled Gotham is coming back.  Looking at all this fan art and remembering how the past couple of seasons just kept getting better...I'm ready.  I couldn't find any really good art of Hugo Strange, Lee, Butch or the Court of Owls.  That's okay, though...next post.  People do seem to love drawing Penguin, though.  I get it.  He's got...personality (I'm making a winky-face).  Anywho, enjoy this awesome fan art as you wait for the new season to start! Fascinating Fanart: Gambit

Image
You know what I love about Gambit?  Everything.  I think it's probably his attitude that draws people in though.  He's consistently having a blast or at least finding whatever humor there may be to find in any situation.  Got that constant laid-back thing going.  Also, how many comic characters have a thick Cajun accent?  How many grew up in a thieves' guild?  He's got that good guy/bad guy thing that Catwoman has.  Maybe he'll help you out, but if it doesn't benefit him, maybe he won't. Did I mention that he can make things explode with his mind?  Okay, so he transfers energy into inanimate objects and then they explode, but still .  His name is Remy Lebeau, a lovely New Orleans-style name; his code name is Gambit, which is perfect for a master thief and his nickname is the Ragin' Cajun.  Oh, yeah, and he totally landed Rogue.  So, you know...yay, Gambit! Fascinating Fanart: She-Hulk!

Image
You remember that ' Incredible Hulk ' show with Lou Ferrigno ?  You can thank them for giving us She-Hulk.  I'm serious!  The network was so pleased with the ratings 'Hulk' was getting, that they wanted to create a female spin-off.  The project didn't pan out and Marvel hurriedly created their own female Hulk, thus giving them exclusive rights.   Jennifer Walters is the cousin of the Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner, as well as an excellent attorney. After being mortally wounded, the only way Bruce could save her was by giving her an emergency blood transfusion.  Of course the Hulk has gamma-radiated blood, so....She-Hulk!  You'll notice in most of these depictions of her, she's either full-on smiling, or she's got that little knowing smirk.  'Cause she knows she's got you beat. "I'm six-foot seven and bright green.  People are going to stare at me no matter how I dress!"-Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk Shulkie by ayhotte

Fascinating Fanart: Scooby Doo!

Image
Um...who doesn't love Scooby Doo?  Did you know that the original cartoon " Scooby Doo: Where Are You? " aired in 1969?  Crazy, right?  Since then, there's been no shortage of shows or movies starring these beloved characters.  According to the fan art, though, we like Velma way more than Fred. Fascinating Fanart: Black Canary

Image
Man!  This one was harder than I thought it'd be!  I thought I'd just go find some awesome pieces of Dinah Lance.  All the internet offered up was a bunch of sultry (and uncomfortable-looking) poses that didn't represent her in the way I'd imagine she'd actually lounge around.  I mean, surely if the bottom half of your costume consisted of nothing but fishnet stockings, you'd lay around with your butt in the air all the time, am I right??  Ew.  That said, hats off to the artists listed below for creating these beautiful portraits that are still sexy, but not in a degrading way. Okay, so no one can change the fact that her costume is usually pretty revealing, but as usual, we're here to celebrate the character.  Not what she is or isn't wearing.  Her character is a total badass!!  She's tough as nails and she's got the fight in her to back it up.  One of the reasons Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) is so head-over-heals for her is that sh...

Fascinating Fanart: The 11th Doctor

Image
I can completely see why so many people have chosen Eleven as 'their' Doctor.  I didn't get it while he was current (don't kirr me!), but I was still sore over the loss of Ten.  Looking back, though, there were some really great moments during his run!  I can't wait to view Eleven's series again and really appreciate his energy.  He's always so happy and fun or very dark and serious.  Plus, he constantly had amazing companions. Fascinating Fanart: Oracle

Image
First of all, if you're an artist of any kind and you love this character like I do-draw her!  There is not nearly enough art out there representing her.  Barbara Gordon's story is pretty well known.  She's the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon and becomes Batman's associate, Batgirl.  The part you may not know is that at one point, the Joker shoots her in the spine and paralyzes her.  It's sad, but it's part of the story (or it was...comics!!  Gah!).  Does she give up?  Does she decide to go live a normal life?  NO.  Like a total badass, she takes up the new mantle of 'Oracle' and keeps track of everything going on in Gotham, reporting to Batman as usual.  She's a hero in every sense of the word and one of the most treasured characters in comics. So, I gotta jet...by kit-kit-kit

Fascinating Fanart: The Crystal Gems!

Image
This show popped up on my radar when I started seeing amazing fan art floating around the internet.  I thought it was just a silly kid's show.  Turns out, I was right.  It's also so much more !  It manages to be absolutely ridiculous with it's fantastical/sci-fi plot line, while still being extremely layered and teaching some valuable lessons.  It's done in such a way that you wouldn't notice unless you tried.  It's a riot to watch.  A riot, I say!  I don't care how old you are.  Remember to have fun. Fascinating Fanart: Suicide Squad Harley Quinn!

Image
Harley's first origin introduced her as an intern at Arkham Asylum in the Batman universe.  She met the Joker, became somewhat obsessed with him and promptly went bat-shit crazy.  She turns him lose and becomes his bubbly-yet-manic sidekick/true-love/punching-bag.  Based on the trailers, I know we'll get some form of this story for her live-action incarnation in Suicide Squad .  You can find the previous live-action versions of her on the 2002 one-season-wonder " Birds of Prey ," where Mia Sara took up the role as the show's main villain, and a small cameo in the Suicide Squad episode of " Arrow ."  This post, though, is celebrating the newest version, whom I know we've already decided to love, am I right?! Fascinating Fanart: Harley Quinn!

Image
This universally  adored DC villainess/anti-heroine was not born in comics, but in a 90's cartoon: Batman: The Animated Series .  She was written as a supporting character for the Joker, but because of her popularity, they continued writing reasons for her to show up.  Thus, a fan-following was born.  She appeared in the spin-off comics for the cartoon, then in comics of her own and before you knew it, it was like she'd been a part of the universe all along.  Like most Batman characters, she's had so much character development over the years and even a few new origin stories.  You can now find her in DC comics, games and most cartoons.  Does this sound like a love letter?  I damn-well hope so. Fascinating Fanart: Mad Love

Image
Can you feel it?  It will be time for the Suicide Squad movie soon.  I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that I've been waiting to see a live-action version of Harley since her debut in the 90s.  Her relationship with the Joker is one of the most twisted and complex in comics.  The fact that they're both homicidal maniacs only sets them apart from everyone else.  Harley's evolved into a different (not always, but sometimes) character since then.  This is just a celebration of the beginning of her story... Fascinating Fanart: Ghostbusters (1984)!

Image
Need a dose of a freaky ghost?  That's right.  Ghostbusters.  1984-style.  This movie (or two..sometimes) will always hold a special place.  This is the first movie to give me nightmares as a child.  Didn't stop me watching it over and over, though.  You know, this might be the thing that led me to seek out other Urban Fantasy media like Buffy and Harry Potter.  Huh.  I never really thought about it before.  Maybe this is the whole reason I'm a fangirl!!  ... Dude.   I love a good revelation, don't you? Ghostbusters Sketch by DaveJorel

Fascinating Fanart: The Apple Family

Image
This week, we're gonna celebrate the Apple family from My Little Pony .  Having grown up in the south, Applejack and her family always bring a sense of familiarity to me.  The charm, the hospitality, the adorable grandmother who's got an earful for anyone who'll listen.  The hard-working brother and the sweet-but-bullheaded little sister.  And Applejack herself, who's no stranger to hard work, but also loves a good time and says all those fun southern phrases: "I ain't sayin' his opinion isn't valid, I'm just sayin' he has rocks for brains." apple brother by lalindaaa

Fascinating Fanart: The Princess Bride

Image
"Twoo wuv...will fowow you foweva."...Tell me you've seen The Princess Bride .  If that's not something you've done in your life, you need to fix that ASAP.  Not only is this a timeless movie...I mean, the narrator and the grandson are a bit dated, but they're hilarious, so who cares?  It's also everything you want in a movie: adventure, murder, kidnapping, swashbuckling, true love, rats of unusual size, I mean... come ON .  Add that to the consistent self-aware humor throughout the flick and you've got something unlike anything else.  Maybe that's why this cult classic is still so popular.  Enjoy this wonderful fan art and have fun stormin' the castle! by Jeff Delgado

Fasacinating Fanart: Bebop and Rocksteady

Image
Can you believe we live in a time where a giant mutant rhino and warthog make it to the big screen?  I mean, right??  The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are my first real fandom, I think.  When I was a tiny girl and my friends were all 'princesses', I was pretending to be a Ninja Turtle.  It's so exciting to finally see Bebop and Rocksteady get the limelight they so clearly deserve.  What's next, guys?  I keep thinking it should really be Thundercats, but that's just me... Fascinating Fanart: Psylocke

Image
Yay!  Psylocke!  I've been waiting for sooooo long for her to be in an X-Men movie!  And no, that five-second role in 'Last Stand' does not count.  Not by a mile.  Not only is she finally in her getup-which looks like she stepped out of the comics (see below), but we finally get to see her use a sword and Psi-Bolts (you'll see...)!  You'll notice in the fan art that sometimes she looks Asian and sometimes she doesn't.  That's because during her comic run, she had two bodies-one British and one Asian because crazy shit happens in comics!  They could dedicate an entire movie to her and we still wouldn't scratch the surface of her story so far.  So here she is in (most of) her comic forms: Psylocke by pushfighter
