Robin: Year One by Chuck Dixon My rating: 5 of 5 stars "Somebody's gotta help him. Might as well be me ." I thought this would be pretty good based on other reviews I've read, as well as the fact that Dick Grayson is still my favorite Robin; it surpassed my expectations. I feel like it really holds up. There weren't any outdated references that pulled me out of the story, which is always a plus. This is the tale of how Robin became Robin. Not the one where his parents were killed and Bruce Wayne took him in, the one where he proves himself and gets accepted. The most interesting part is how everyone notices he's just a little boy. That's addressed. Repeatedly. Villains such as Two-Face, the Mad Hatter, Blockbuster, Mr. Freeze and Killer Moth were featured. The stand-out role was definitely Alfred, though.   Gotham Academy, Volume 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy  by  Becky Cloonan My rating:  5 of 5 stars "All of my dungeon-crawling fantasies are about to come true. I'm gonna loot the crap out of this place." I really should have expected more, but as it was, this was a very pleasant surprise. I'm already a fan of  Brenden Fletcher , but I've been turned on to a new co-writer and artist and I'll be eagerly following them, too, now. The art was astounding! The tone was perfect, especially if you're already a Gotham City fan. You believe this school of wayward Gotham kids really lives there. There were some great tie-ins to the established citizens of this creepy city that I didn't see coming, either. I really enjoyed finding out the clues along with the two main heroines-Olive and Maps. Green Lantern Corps: Recharge by Geoff Johns My rating: 4 of 5 stars "Good work, Poozers. Ya deserve a donut for that." Ah, man. So I was reading through the Geoff Johns Green Lantern run, right? That story revolves mostly around Hal Jordan and a bit of the Corps. For whatever reason, I kind of overlooked this series which ran around the same time. My goal is to read both up to the Blackest Night/Brightest Day storyline. I'm so glad I went back to these. I just love space stories where the majority of characters are mostly aliens that look weird and awesome. Kilowog and Guy continue to be favorites. I also really like Isamot (the dinosaur-looking dude) . In all seriousness, though, why does it always have to be giant spiders??? Green Lantern Vol. 3: Wanted - Hal Jordan by Geoff Johns My rating: 3 of 5 stars Rocket Red: "Everyone knows you are guilty. " Hal Jordan: "What else is new?" This one was short and I didn't love the Amon Sur storyline. By the end, I understood why we needed it, but it wasn't my favorite. We dive into a little more OA/Star Sapphire history and that was pretty awesome. However, the triangle that led to was not fun to watch. Especially when you learn the position Hal's in by the end of the story. Aside from the clear Hal Jordan moments, my favorite cameos were Batman (all showing off his willpower and whatnot) and John Stewart being quintessentially himself. This is the first collection that's felt a little 'eh,' to me, but it was by no means bad. I loved Daniel Acuna's art contribution. View all my reviews

DC Comics: Bombshells, Vol. 1: Enlisted by Marguerite Bennett My rating: 4 of 5 stars "Oh, 'undead' doesn't mean... can't be dead. 'Undead' just means they haven't met the death that's right for them yet- fortunately, we are problem solvers." This story introduces a new team of familiar superheroines reimagined to fit into the alternate history of WWII when women were needed in jobs that men used to dominate. It's quite the feminist story.
