Art Admiration: Mermaids Part I
Mermaids. Women with fish tails. We've represented them in art as long as there's been art. It's fascinating to think about why we're so fascinated by them. Are they possible? Usually you are firmly 'yes' or 'no' in response to that question. Well, I believe that anything's possible. Maybe they died out like the Dodo birds. Maybe we just made them up to explain why people didn't come back from sea. Maybe they're aliens from another planet and they totally live underwater. In any case, we love to draw them, so check out some of the really astonishing art I've come across depicting these strange ethereal creatures:
