Fascinating Fanart: The Crystal Gems!

Image
This show popped up on my radar when I started seeing amazing fan art floating around the internet.  I thought it was just a silly kid's show.  Turns out, I was right.  It's also so much more !  It manages to be absolutely ridiculous with it's fantastical/sci-fi plot line, while still being extremely layered and teaching some valuable lessons.  It's done in such a way that you wouldn't notice unless you tried.  It's a riot to watch.  A riot, I say!  I don't care how old you are.  Remember to have fun. Fascinating Fanart: Suicide Squad Harley Quinn!

Image
Harley's first origin introduced her as an intern at Arkham Asylum in the Batman universe.  She met the Joker, became somewhat obsessed with him and promptly went bat-shit crazy.  She turns him lose and becomes his bubbly-yet-manic sidekick/true-love/punching-bag.  Based on the trailers, I know we'll get some form of this story for her live-action incarnation in Suicide Squad .  You can find the previous live-action versions of her on the 2002 one-season-wonder " Birds of Prey ," where Mia Sara took up the role as the show's main villain, and a small cameo in the Suicide Squad episode of " Arrow ."  This post, though, is celebrating the newest version, whom I know we've already decided to love, am I right?! Fascinating Fanart: Harley Quinn!

Image
This universally  adored DC villainess/anti-heroine was not born in comics, but in a 90's cartoon: Batman: The Animated Series .  She was written as a supporting character for the Joker, but because of her popularity, they continued writing reasons for her to show up.  Thus, a fan-following was born.  She appeared in the spin-off comics for the cartoon, then in comics of her own and before you knew it, it was like she'd been a part of the universe all along.  Like most Batman characters, she's had so much character development over the years and even a few new origin stories.  You can now find her in DC comics, games and most cartoons.  Does this sound like a love letter?  I damn-well hope so. Fascinating Fanart: Mad Love

Image
Can you feel it?  It will be time for the Suicide Squad movie soon.  I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that I've been waiting to see a live-action version of Harley since her debut in the 90s.  Her relationship with the Joker is one of the most twisted and complex in comics.  The fact that they're both homicidal maniacs only sets them apart from everyone else.  Harley's evolved into a different (not always, but sometimes) character since then.  This is just a celebration of the beginning of her story... Fascinating Fanart: Ghostbusters (1984)!

Image
Need a dose of a freaky ghost?  That's right.  Ghostbusters.  1984-style.  This movie (or two..sometimes) will always hold a special place.  This is the first movie to give me nightmares as a child.  Didn't stop me watching it over and over, though.  You know, this might be the thing that led me to seek out other Urban Fantasy media like Buffy and Harry Potter.  Huh.  I never really thought about it before.  Maybe this is the whole reason I'm a fangirl!!  ... Dude.   I love a good revelation, don't you? Ghostbusters Sketch by DaveJorel
