On the Telly: The Musketeers

So, BBC did a Musketeers show, huh?  I wonder if it will be full of action or if it'll be more dramatic?  Obviously, it's a period piece.  I've seen the actors playing them in a couple of things...I think they're pretty good.  These were my initial thoughts.

I watched the first episode and it became: Oh, wow, they aren't playing around!  Hah!  That was funny...is that freaking Peter Capaldi??  ....Well, they're not afraid of a little blood, are they?  This show has it all.  You know about the Musketeers, right?  Well, you've never seen these Musketeers before.  It takes place right in the prime of their lives, right in the middle of their stories and isn't that the best place to start?  It's definitely more action-y and I would recommend it to those who like Indiana Jones or the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

The characters are well fleshed-out and relatable as well as dashing and honorable.  They're not so honorable that they won't pull a con to get what they're after, though.  They are the perfect anti-heroes: struggling to be honest while taking orders from people who lie and cheat and being powerless to stop it.  It's ridiculously easy to root for them.

It's set up as a mini-adventure in every episode.  So, while there are ongoing story lines, each episode pretty much wraps up whatever drama happens at the beginning of it.  The women are portrayed nicely, each strong in their own way while still adhering to the rules of society, even as they rile against them.  I'm a chick, so that matters to me.  I've only just started season 2 and it's shaping up to be as exciting as the first...none of that second series lagging.  They have great guest stars, too...like say Vinnie Jones?

Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu
PFAVORITE CHARACTER:
Well, that's really difficult.  Capaldi (Doctor Who) makes an excellent villain-each line is delivered brilliantly.  At the same time, Porthos is probably my favorite Musketeer.  He comes from the slums and was raised as a thief, so his journey is more compelling.  He's also super manly and the one with the best sense of humor.  What's not to like?

Howard Charles as Porthos
QUOTE:
Aramis: "What's the vital thing to remember in a duel?"
D'Artagnan: "Honour?"
Porthos: [slaps the back of D'Artagnan's head] "Not getting killed.  By biting, kicking, gouging...it's all good."
D'Artagnan: "I was raised to fight like a gentlemen."
Aramis: "Were you raised to die young?"

RATING:
This is one of the more exciting shows currently airing.  Yeah....adventurous.  8 out of 10 easy.
