Movie Review: Wolves (2014)
About time we did a werewolf movie, right? We start out following a 'normal' teenage kid (Lucas Till who plays 'Havok' in the X-Men movies) who's obviously about to discover he's a werewolf. All the signs are there...then, he wakes up one morning to find *murder* and hits the road to find his real family. See, he was adopted and stuff. This is not a horror/gore movie, but rather a great story featuring monsters along the lines of Monster Squad or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I thought it was kick-ass and the best werewolf movie to come out in years.
It's really a this-town-ain't-big-enough-for-the-two-of-us tale, only there's more than meets the eye. You want this boy to find out where (and who) he's from because he's had a really bad couple of days and you like him, if only because he's the only guy you've met that isn't an asshole. He's the genuine anti-hero because he's got morals, but he turns into a beast-man and can f*ck your shit up. But, you know, he's polite and whatnot, too.
Right from the get-go you can tell they went all-out on the makeup. This is not one of those cheesy CGI-face movies where you spend every transformation scene cringing. It's also not giant Twilight wolves, but more in line with the 2010 version of The Wolfman. Also, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Aquaman) plays the big bad. I can't even explain how much fun it was to watch him play an evil werewolf king. You'll see. There are also several side characters that pop up and keep you plenty entertained.
MEMORABLE SCENE:
Yeah, it's probably the werewolf sex scene, which hopefully says it all.
QUOTE:
Wild Joe: "Life is like an onion. The more you peel it back, the more it makes you cry. Especially when you're afflicted. You know, like...afflicted?" [bares teeth]
Cayden: "Holy shit."
RATING:
I lurved this, but I'm a gigantor fan of werewolves (could ya tell??). So, if you're not in that camp, you may find the story to be easy to predict and not as entertaining. As it was, I enjoyed every line. 8.5/10.
EXTRAS:
Here's >> a random picture of Jason Momoa when he was on Baywatch because reasons!
