Movie Review: Point Break (1991)

Surfers.  That was kind of all I knew about this film before watching it.  That, and at some point Patrick Swayze was going to fight Keanu Reeves on a beach.  It's that infamous still from the movie, you know?  Turns out, it's also a heist movie and who doesn't love a good heist movie?

The tone of the film switches back and forth from 'Buddy Cop' to 'High-Octane Action Thriller.'  This young cop, played by the oh-so-believable-as-a-surfer Keanu Reeves, is trying to catch a bunch of bank robbers by surfing undercover!  I'm sorry, but I cannot not love that plot.

It's one of those fun movies where you want to see the good guys and the bad guys win.  It's not that the bank robbers aren't doing wrong things, it's just that they're so rad you can't hate them.  Mostly.  Because you're rooting for everyone, you gotta keep watching...someone has to lose.

Keanu's partner is a wizened rough-around-the-edges Gary Busey.  If you don't know who he is, shame on you for not watching the right movies.  His love interest is played by the way-underutilized Lori Petty (Tank Girl, A League of Their Own).  Also, there are some really great surfing shots in there.  Just sayin.'

MEMORABLE SCENE:
I'm gonna go with the skydiving scene.  You'll know it when you see it.

QUOTE:
Bohdi: "Fear causes hesitation and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true."

RATING:
The only thing this movie really didn't have going for it was how dated it was.  If you watch it in that way where you pretend it's a period piece to begin with (say, like...American Hustle?), I find this is not an issue.  It's all about how you look at things, people!  So, a good, solid heist movie-8 out of 10.

EXTRAS:
They're doing this remake, right?  Only, I watched the trailer for it and everything is more extreme now.  They're not surfers, they're 'extreme sports athletes;' they don't rob banks, they pull 'sophisticated corporate heists.'  So, while I'm not saying it's going to be bad (honestly, I think I'll quite enjoy it), I am saying that these are two different movies and you should definitely give this one a shot.
