Book Review: Enna Burning by Shannon Hale

Enna Burning by Shannon Hale My rating: 4 of 5 stars "I think you’re one loop short of a knot, Enna. A little tug, and you’re undone.” So, tone-wise, this was almost completely different from the first book in the series and it makes sense that it would be. The first book was a spin on the Grimm fairy tale "The Goose Girl" , and it read like a fairy tale. This installment read more like high fantasy. It's the same kingdom, now at war, featuring a heroine that was introduced in the previous book. In fact, the majority of background characters shift to the forefront, so enjoying the first installment almost guaranteed you'd already be invested no matter how the tale went. The author took the world she'd embellished upon and just ran with it and the result was something just as captivating, but in a different way altogether. I really enjoyed watching everyone from the first book develop and evolve. Especially our MC, Enna. She was all over the place and she w...

Book Review: Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Vicious by V.E. Schwab My rating: 5 of 5 stars "But these words people threw around—humans, monsters, heroes, villains—to Victor it was all just a matter of semantics. Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them." Damn, damn... DAMN . This was a wicked-cool book. I went into this with the idea that it was "a dark superhero story." It is, but it's also so much more. What if you suspected that people with super-human powers actually existed? What if you were in college and decided to try to prove it as your thesis? What if you figured out how to create the correct circumstances to become ExtraOrdinary ? What if you and your best friend decided to try it out? What if you were both sociopaths? Interested now? This turned out to be as much of an Urban Fantasy as a study of psychology. It was also effortless and entertaining to read. There are many singular ...

Book Review: Kingdom of Ash

Image
Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas My rating: 5 of 5 stars "Things from legends—that’s who surrounded him. The witches, the spider … He might as well have been a character in one of the books he’d lent Aelin last fall." "She was no helpless princess. She had never been." Do you love a good epic fantasy? If so, read this series! This thing was more satisfying and enthrallling than it had any right to be. That goes for this book and the story as a whole. The character the whole story revolves around is for the most part unlikeable. She's brave and intense and self-sacrificing, but she's a terrible person, too. I freaking love that. On top of all that, she's young and naive and thinks about all of her problems like some really long game of chess that she refuses to lose. She's not a Disney princess, y'all. And the assortment of characters we pick up along the way? MAN. Each of them is so unique and some you instantly feel prote...

Book Review: Tower of Dawn

Image
Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas My rating: 4 of 5 stars “I have no interest in easy friends—easy people. I think I trust them less than the difficult ones, and find them far less compelling, too.” As a fan, this book was difficult to read and here's why: -It takes place during the same time as the previous book. That's right-no resolution to the end of that story. Yet. -Its cast is made up of entirely new people outside of, oh, let's say four characters (if you've read the prequel novellas). And up to this point, all of them have been peripheral characters at best. So, you'd think that an almost 700-page -long book starring side-characters that doesn't actually further the timeline would be irrelevant, right? Nope. It was absolutely amazing and if you haven't read it yet, you'd better read it before the last one. I said it was difficult, not that it was bad! We really live in this entirely new kingdom we're introduced to. A...

● ♚ ● ⚔ ● ♜ ● ♚ ● ♜ ● ⚔ ● ♚ ● With all these updated fairy tale movies coming out, I thought it would be appropriate to shed some light on our favorite villains: The Evil Queens. Who doesn't love to hate them? I've listed these in alphabetical order by title because I'm terrible at ranking things.  :) ● ♚ ● ⚔ ● ♜ ● ♚ ● ♜ ● ⚔ ● ♚ ●
